Swimming Pool Paving

Swimming Pool Paving made of Poured Concrete

Concrete coping has multiple options as they are linked with caulking and mortar. Since, it consists of separate stones, it is easy to mix and match. They are also available in different colours, by experimenting with them we can come up with a fine design according to our liking.

Precast Concrete

Another kind of concrete coping is precast concrete. It is quite thinner when compared to poured concrete and it is considerably lighter. This lighter concrete makes the perfect pool’s bond beam/wall as it stresses lightly against the pool structure. This aids in increasing the lifetime of the pool. If you are looking for a pool that lasts longer, precast pool copingstone is the right choice.

Pool paving made of Natural stone

This pool coping stone is used by many because of its natural look and feel. It gives a new personality to the pool with its warm colour, texture and firmness of the stone. There are various natural stones that are used for coping swimming pools such as the quarried granite, limestone and other fieldstones. These natural stones form a sturdy beam and with its uniform thickness, these natural stones form an element of visual beauty

Bricks

This kind of coping is famous for its charm and comfort feel. The coping made of bricks are available in a wide range of colours which makes it a convenient choice for people looking to beautify their pools. One should know that the dark coloured bricks can absorb the heat easily during the summer. We mostly use swimming pools on hot sunny days, it becomes a nuisance if it is too hot to touch the sides of the wall. Choosing lighter colour is a sane option to avoid such inconvenience, else you will have to wear flip-flops around the pool area.

Bricks are not as firm and smooth as materials like concrete and natural stone. It is extremely rough and can be chipped easily, causing minor cuts in our feet. If look is what you are going for, then these minor inconvenience can be put behind us, as it provides a stylish looking pool.

Pool Filter Sand

The importance of pool filter sand.

Granules of sand are irregularly shaped and make an efficient filtering medium, as evidence by the many freshwater creeks that are naturally filtered by sand.

Sand filters contain a deep layer of sand that traps dirt and debris as water flows through it. The trapped particles fill the spaces between granules of sand and actually help the filter collect even smaller particles. Over time, the accumulation of trapped particles will restrict water flow, the pressure inside the filter will increase, and it will be time to backwash, or clean the filter.

When the sand in the filter is clean, water passes through easily. When pool water is unbalanced and the filter isn’t cleaned properly, mud balls can form and impede the filtering process. As the situation worsens, the water forces channels through the sand, allowing unfiltered water to pass back into the pool.

This is why it is important to get your Filter sand change every SECOND year!

pool water levels

Pool water levels

Pool Water Levels – Does it matter?

The level of your pool’s water is constantly rising and falling – depending on how much it rains and how much water is lost by evaporation. In Gauteng this is especially relevant in the warmer seasons when it is both hot and raining.

When the pool water level is higher than half way up, the water moving into the skimmer is going so slow that debris may pass by the opening without being sucked in. If the pool water completely covers the skimmer opening, floating debris can’t get in at all.

When the pool water level is too low the pool skimmer can bottom out, thereby sucking air into the pump system which can result in losing the prime (water moving through the system) .This can result in burning up your swimming pool filter pump motor.

Ideally you should keep your swimming pool water levels between one third and one half the way up the opening of the swimming pool skimmer. This is the level at which your swimming pool skimmers operate most effectively.

Pool Safety Tips

Pool Safety Tips

Pool Safety tips

Nothing beats relaxing in a swimming pool on a hot summers day in Gauteng. By following pool safety guidelines, you can make sure that you can relax without worrying about accidents happening in or around your pool. We suggest pool owners make pool safety their priority by following these guidelines:

Secure your pool with appropriate barriers. Completely surround your pool with a 1.2-meter-high fence with a self-closing and latching gate. Use a safety cover on the pool when not in use and remove any ladders or steps used for access. Consider installing a pool alarm.

Never leave a young child unattended near water and do not trust a child’s life to another child.

Protect your skin. Limit the amount of direct sunlight you receive between 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. and wear sunscreen with a protection factor of at least 15.

Designate a responsible person to watch the pool when people are in it—never allow anyone to swim alone.
Have young or inexperienced swimmers wear a life jacket.

Ensure everyone in the home knows how to swim well by enrolling them in age-appropriate swimming courses.

Keep your pool clean and clear. Maintain proper chemical levels, circulation and filtration. Regularly test and adjust the chemical levels to reduce the risk of earaches, rashes or more serious diseases.

Establish and enforce rules and safe behaviors, such as “ask permission to swim”, “no diving”, “stay away from drain covers”, “swim with a friend”, “no glass containers near the pool” and “don’t run.”

Ensure everyone in your home knows how to respond to swimming pool emergencies by having appropriate safety equipment and taking, first aid and CPR courses.

pool leak detection bucket test

Pool leak detection bucket test

Pool leak detection bucket test

To do the pool leak detection bucket test, fill the pool water to its normal level. Shut off the pump so that the pool water don’t move.
Fill a 20 Liter bucket with pool water to approximately 5cm’s from the top.
Place the bucket on the first or second step of the pool. Make sure the bucket is immersed in the pool at least 13cm’s.
Mark the water level inside the bucket.
Mark the pool water level on the outside of the bucket.
Resume the normal pool pump operation.

Compare the two water levels after 24 hours. If the pool water (market outside) went down more than the bucket’s water level, there is probably a leak. If the water levels are the same, its due to evaporation.

In case of rain, you will need to repeat the Pool leak detection bucket test. Water loss from normal evaporation can be expected.
